Fire dogs demonstrate investigative skills in Mansfield training drill

Mansfield Fire Museum and Mansfield Fire Station hosted a specialist training exercise last week for the East Midlands Fire Investigation Dog Unit alongside colleagues from West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service.

The session tested both dogs and handlers in key investigative techniques, including building and clothing searches as well as discrimination exercises using “burn pots.” These exercises are vital in fire investigations, where dogs can detect trace amounts of ignitable liquid as small as one microlitre – evidence that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Among those taking part was Annette Carrington from West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service, who trained with her dog, Holly. The pair are preparing to take over official duties later this year when Annette’s colleague, Alex Daw, retires in November.

Fire Investigation Dog Handler Tim Marston highlighted the critical role of the animals in uncovering hidden evidence. He explained that ignitable liquids used as accelerants are invisible to the naked eye, particularly after being burned, but trained dogs are able to identify them even in trace form. With only 24 fire investigation dogs operating across the UK, their expertise provides vital support not only in securing convictions but also in assisting neighbouring fire and rescue services.

Since its formation in November 2023, the East Midlands Fire Investigation Dog Unit has supported nearly 600 investigations. Evidence uncovered by the dogs has directly contributed to convictions totalling more than 166 years for arsonists, demonstrating the significant impact of their work in tackling deliberate fire-setting.

With The Emergency Services Show fast approaching, the spotlight is also turning to Ambassadogs – a campaign recognising the incredible impact of emergency service dogs. From providing comfort to sparking smiles, these canine ambassadors will be on hand at the show, and visitors are encouraged to join the celebration by meeting these four-legged heroes and their handlers.
