Greater Manchester Police’s Tactical Dog Unit has expanded to provide round-the-clock coverage, following the recruitment of 11 new handlers, the introduction of rescue dogs from the RSPCA, and the launch of the force’s first-ever digital detection dog.

Operating 24/7 for the first time, the unit has seen a sharp rise in activity, making 170 arrests and carrying out 177 stop searches between May and July 2025. The figures mark a significant year-on-year increase, with arrests up by 266% in May, 81% in June and 62% in July compared to 2023. Stop searches also surged, including a 163% rise in May. Offences targeted included burglary, robbery, theft and possession of offensive weapons.

The uplift supports GMP’s Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee and Safe4Summer initiative, aimed at tackling crime and boosting visibility in local communities. Chief Inspector Chris Clarke, of GMP’s Specialist Operations Unit, said the expansion was “an exciting and pivotal time” for the unit, adding: “Our dogs play a vital role in bringing offenders to justice, from detecting concealed items to apprehending suspects attempting to flee.”

Among the new recruits is Barney, a one-year-old Springer Spaniel who has become GMP’s first “Digi-Dog.” Specially trained to sniff out hidden electronic devices such as SIM cards, SD cards, mobile phones and hard drives, Barney is already supporting complex investigations in counter-terrorism, safeguarding and organised crime. According to his handler, PC Ben Lomax, Barney has found hidden items on every operation so far, including five concealed devices during a single search.

The unit has also welcomed four Springer Spaniels rescued by the RSPCA after being found in squalid conditions in Doncaster. Following assessment, Bruce, Pablo, Lola and Nellie are now undergoing specialist training to detect drugs, cash and other illicit items, with officers describing the project as a chance to give the animals “a real purpose” after their difficult start in life.

With 176 new frontline officers also joining GMP’s neighbourhood teams, the expanded Dog Unit is set to play an increasingly visible role in tackling crime and safeguarding communities across Greater Manchester.
