Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA) has unveiled what it describes as the most advanced helicopter air ambulance of its type in the UK. The new Airbus H145 D3, based at Aberdeen International Airport, will replace the charity’s existing EC135 and is expected to enter service in October following crew training.

Charity leaders hailed the aircraft as a “game changer” for emergency response across the country. SCAA Chief Executive David Craig said: “When our new helicopter goes operational next month, it will be the most capable air ambulance of its kind in the UK, operating in the most challenging environment. This specially customised aircraft will enable us to realise our ambition that no one in Scotland should die because help can’t get there in time.”

The new helicopter offers greater range, endurance and capacity, with space to carry two paramedics alongside specialist doctors from ScotSTAR North’s Emergency Medical Retrieval Service. It is also equipped with night vision imaging systems to enhance operations during winter months.

Dr Donna Paterson, Clinical Lead for the North of Scotland Trauma Network and an EMRS consultant, said the aircraft would significantly improve survival rates and recovery prospects for patients. “Prompt medical assessment and treatment are essential for both trauma and medical emergencies,” she said. “This new aircraft allows longer flights, additional space for patient stabilisation, and enhanced operational capability. It will undoubtedly save even more lives.”

The upgraded aircraft has been made possible thanks to public support for SCAA’s “Operation Skyward” campaign, which is seeking an additional £2 million a year to sustain the enhanced service, on top of the £8m the charity already raises annually.

Over the coming weeks, the aircraft will visit schools, hospitals and key locations across Scotland as part of training flights supported by aviation partner Babcock. Craig said these community visits would also allow the public to see first-hand “the helicopter their support has made possible” and give crews the opportunity to thank supporters directly.

“It is with a huge sense of pride that everyone involved with SCAA unveils the country’s newest air ambulance – a key milestone in the ongoing development and growth of the charity,” Craig added.
