Newcastle residents are set to benefit from a new emergency services base this month as North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) moves into Gosforth Community Fire Station alongside Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS).

One ambulance is now stationed at the Jubilee Road site for 12 hours a day, with plans to extend cover to 24 hours in the coming months. NEAS said the new co-location would help boost efficiency, improve clinical care for patients, and support efforts to recover ambulance response time standards.

The move forms part of a wider investment programme agreed in 2022/23, which has seen the Trust secure multi-million pound funding to expand its fleet, create new co-located bases in high-demand areas, and recruit more frontline staff including paramedics, ambulance support practitioners, and clinical advisors.

Although ambulance crews are deployed across the region according to patient demand, the new Gosforth base will increase local availability and strengthen joint working with fire service colleagues.

Claire Jobling, Head of Operations for NEAS’s north division, said: “We are looking forward to moving into the new station and serving the needs of our local community. It’s also a chance to work closely with our colleagues and build relationships as a collaborative emergency service. Co-located stations help our teams get to know each other better, which makes us an even better team when we’re on scene together at an incident.”

Area Manager Ken Corbett of TWFRS added: “The crews at Gosforth Community Fire Station are looking forward to welcoming their blue-light colleagues from North East Ambulance Service as we work together to keep our communities safe. Sharing a base will help us work more closely, coordinate more effectively, and build even stronger relationships between our teams – which will make a real difference when it matters most. This is our eighth co-location with NEAS and shows our commitment to driving collaboration and delivering the best possible emergency service.”

The Gosforth site joins a growing list of NEAS fire service co-locations across the region, including stations at Hebburn, Wallsend, Marley Park, Rainton Bridge, Swalwell, Washington and West Denton.
