A charity dedicated to supporting members of the armed forces and emergency services is helping people regain independence through the partnership of highly trained assistance dogs.

Hounds for Heroes was founded to support those living with a physical disability or medical condition – whether caused during service, later in life, or through illness or accident. Its dogs are trained to help with everyday tasks such as opening and closing doors, picking up dropped items, dressing, or fetching help. Beyond the practical support, the dogs provide companionship, confidence and a renewed sense of freedom.

“We understand how overwhelming it can feel to adapt after a life-changing diagnosis or injury,” said the charity. “Our dogs are there to ease those challenges and make a difference not only to the individual, but also to their family, friends and wider support networks.”

One of the charity’s assistance dogs, Alice, is named in memory of Alice Clark, the paramedic who tragically lost her life on duty. The Golden Retriever joined Hounds for Heroes as an eight-week-old puppy and, after completing her training, was partnered with Bill, a former police officer. Alice now helps Bill manage daily tasks and accompanies him to table tennis and ukulele clubs, enabling him to maintain social connections and independence.

The charity accepts applications from anyone who has served or is serving in the armed forces or emergency services, regular or reserve, with a confirmed physical disability or medical condition. Its focus is on physical disability, with dogs trained specifically to provide practical support.
