The College of Paramedics has announced that it will officially become the Royal College of Paramedics from January 2026, following constitutional changes and a full rebrand.

The recognition, granted by His Majesty The King on the advice of ministers, is a rare distinction reflecting the significant contribution of the paramedic profession to UK healthcare. Protected Royal titles are conferred sparingly, only to organisations that meet strict criteria.

The announcement follows a period of rapid professional development for paramedics. Since 2000, the scope of practice has expanded dramatically, with clinicians now working not only in frontline ambulance roles but across GP surgeries, higher education, helicopter emergency medical services, the military, offshore environments, leadership, research and more.

With more than 20,000 members, the College represents the collective voice of the profession, influencing healthcare policy, setting standards, and supporting members’ professional development. In 2024, it was awarded a Royal Charter in recognition of its objectives to inspire and enable paramedics in an environment built on safety, collegiality, inclusiveness, wellbeing and innovation. The following year, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales became the College’s first Royal Patron.

Tracy Nicholls OBE, Chief Executive of the College of Paramedics, described the conferral of the Royal title as “a defining milestone” for the profession.

“This historic recognition is a tribute to the generations of professionals whose commitment, skill and service have shaped our profession,” she said. “It affirms the vital contribution that our members continue to make to society today. The title Royal not only elevates the standing of our profession, but it also strengthens our voice, enhances our influence, and reinforces our mission to uphold the highest standards of integrity, excellence and service.”

She thanked members for their role in achieving the honour, noting that member surveys had consistently shown support for the College to seek Royal status.

Jon Price, President of the College of Paramedics, said the recognition “signifies the growing recognition of the extraordinary contribution that paramedics make to society.”

“It is a milestone that belongs not only to us today, but to every paramedic who has gone before us and to the future generations still to come,” he said. “This recognition reaffirms the vital role paramedics play in the lives of the people we care for and strengthens our collective commitment to continually advance the highest standards of care.”

From January 2026, the Royal College of Paramedics will continue its work representing the profession, supporting members and shaping the future of paramedic practice across the UK.
