North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has completed the rollout of new breathing apparatus (BA) sets and associated equipment across the service.

The milestone follows a detailed procurement process and comprehensive training programme to ensure firefighters are confident using the new technology in operational settings.

BA sets are essential for protecting firefighters in environments where air quality is compromised, such as smoke-filled buildings or chemical incidents.

Jonathan Dyson, Chief Fire Officer said the investment represents a major step forward for firefighter safety.

“This significant investment in state-of-the-art equipment reflects our commitment to the safety and wellbeing of our crews. The introduction of new BA sets strengthens our operational capabilities and ensures our teams are equipped with the most advanced technology available.

“Crucially, this upgrade enhances our ability to protect the public, enabling a safer and more effective response. I would like to thank the delivery and programme team for their outstanding work in delivering this project.”

The new BA sets, supplied by MSA Safety, feature integrated audio and visual alerts to monitor air supply and automatically trigger a distress signal if a firefighter is at risk. Each set transmits live data to an electronic telemetry entry control board for real-time safety monitoring.

The upgraded facemasks also feature improved communication technology, helping firefighters maintain clear voice transmission in challenging conditions.

Jo Coles, Deputy Mayor for Policing, Fire and Crime, said the investment reflects a continued commitment to firefighter welfare.

“Our firefighters show huge courage and professionalism day in and day out, and we are all incredibly grateful for their service. The new breathing apparatus will ensure they have the best possible protection. Investing in firefighter safety is a key part of building a modern fire service for York and North Yorkshire.”
