On 1 January 2026, Jonathan Kemp will set out on a 3,000km walk from the Shetland Islands to Cork, Ireland: a seven-month journey across the UK and Ireland aimed at raising awareness and funds for mental health.

The Finding Peace of Mind Charity Walk will see ex-Metropolitan Police officer Jonathan travel through Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland, symbolising a journey of recovery, “beginning in the cold, dark days of winter and moving step by step towards light and hope.” Along the way, he will share his own experiences of bipolar disorder, depression, addiction and dyslexia, using the walk to encourage open conversations about mental health and resilience.

“I was an exemplary police sergeant, successfully renovated properties, learnt two Chinese languages, completed a master’s in international finance and trade and started a new business as an entrepreneur – but all the while I was struggling to simply exist.”

Jonathan aims to raise £80,000 in support of four charities: SAMH in Scotland, Mind in England and Wales, Aware NI in Northern Ireland, and Aware in Ireland. Together, these organisations provide vital education, advocacy and support for people affected by mental health challenges.

Throughout the seven months, Jonathan will donate proceeds from his memoir Finding Peace of Mind and speaking engagements, while also undertaking a series of personal challenges including giving 30 talks, recording 30 interviews, and capturing 30 photographs celebrating mindfulness and simple beauty. He also plans to honour his great-grandmother’s legacy by replicating her 1913 suffragist march from Carlisle to London.

Supporters can follow Jonathan’s progress, join him for sections of the route, or donate via JustGiving.

“The walk is about connection, honesty and courage,” he says, and an invitation for others to walk, talk, and take a step towards better mental health together.
