PGI has announced that its BarriAire Carbon Shield Elite Pro hoods are now certified to the newly introduced NFPA 1970 particulate-blocking standard for structural firefighting PPE.
NFPA 1970 replaces NFPA 1971, NFPA 1981 and NFPA 1982, bringing all structural gear and SCBA into a single standard. One of the most significant shifts is that particulate-blocking hoods move from being a strong recommendation to a mandatory requirement.
PGI says its Elite Pro and Elite Pro Short hoods have been UL-certified to the new specification. The company says the hoods deliver 99.9% particulate efficiency, have no intentionally added PFAS, and use what it calls the industry’s ‘most flame-resistant fibre’.
The move is part of the wider sector push to reduce firefighter exposure to heat, toxic particulates and carcinogens.
