The Home Office has announced a new contract with Australian tech provider Etherstack who will be providing the solution to allow Emergency Services Network users to communicate with the existing Airwave during the migration phase.

This hybrid solution means that Airwave and the 5G ESN will run concurrently using what is called an InterWorking Gateway solution. Etherstack’s 3GPP LMR-IWF as a bridge for vital UK public safety communications.

Emergency services in the UK currently use the TETRA digital radio network known as Airwave and this Etherstack switching platform solution will see it talking to the new LTE cellular based ESN. ESN is being delivered through IBM providing the User Services (US), while BT/EE are providing Mobile Services.

Commenting on the contract award, Etherstack CEO David Deacon said he was thrilled that the Home Office had chosen their product for ESN. “This win demonstrates our ability to deploy and provide 24/7 support to our highly complex, resilient public safety solutions on multiple continents around the world.”
