Simple winter car checks that could save your life

Every year, air ambulance charities across the UK respond to more than 8,000 road traffic collisions, many of which could be prevented through simple safety checks and greater awareness on the roads.

As winter conditions increase the risks for motorists, Air Ambulances UK and Kwik Fit have teamed up for Brake’s Road Safety Week (16–22 November 2025) to raise awareness around safe driving during the winter months.

The partnership is centred on a national campaign encouraging motorists to check their tyres, brakes and lights before travelling in winter weather. Both organisations say that small, routine steps can significantly reduce the likelihood of collisions, particularly during darker evenings and icy conditions. Indeed, Brake says five people die on UK roads every day, with a significant proportion of these fatalities considered preventable.

To support the message, Air Ambulances UK has released a new video fronted by former Formula One driver and charity ambassador Karun Chandhok. The film features Chandhok alongside staff from Kwik Fit and clinicians from Great Western Air Ambulance Charity, who demonstrate quick, practical checks that any driver can carry out at home. Those taking part include Vicki Brown, Advanced Practitioner in Critical Care, and Air Operations Officer Tim Ross-Smith, as well as Kwik Fit managers Martin Rennie and Mark Noble.

Air Ambulances UK Interim CEO Lindsay Boswell said the campaign aims to remind motorists that simple actions can make a measurable difference on the roads.

“During Road Safety Week, we want to highlight how small actions—like checking your tyres, brakes, and lights—can make a huge difference on our roads this winter. Working with our national partner Kwik Fit and featuring our video campaign with Karun Chandhok, we hope to inspire drivers to take these vital steps and help reduce the number of preventable accidents. Together, we save lives.”

Lindsay Boswell, Interim CEO of Air Ambulances UK.

The initiative forms part of the charity’s wider commitment to promoting safer driving across the UK. As well as raising awareness, the organisation is encouraging motorists to take advantage of Kwik Fit’s free Vehicle Safety Check service—a quick assessment designed to help identify issues before they become dangerous. Both partners hope that by making safety checks more accessible, more drivers will take steps to protect themselves and others this winter.
