Scottish policing delivers first end point assessment for new officers

Scottish policing has marked a new milestone with the delivery of its first-ever End Point Assessment (EPA) for probationary officers. The assessment, held at Dounreay and Garlogie, is a significant step in how new officers are assessed and formally confirmed in rank.

Designed and delivered by the Civil Nuclear Constabulary’s (CNC) Professional Development Unit (PDU), the EPA offers a structured alternative to the national apprenticeship route, which Scottish officers do not follow. Instead, it provides a clear, practical way to assess whether probationary officers meet the standards required for operational policing in Scotland.

Officers were tested across a range of professional competencies. This included a timed knowledge exam, scenario-based operational assessments, completing a written witness statement and taking part in a professional discussion. Together, these elements assessed legal understanding, decision-making, communication skills and overall operational readiness.

Before taking part in the EPA, officers completed a professional portfolio demonstrating their knowledge, skills and behaviours. This was followed by a Gateway Interview with their PDU lead and an online knowledge check focused on legislation and policing policy.

All five officers who took part passed the assessment.

“The EPA gives probationary officers the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have developed through training and operational experience. The officers met a strong professional standard, despite the challenges they have faced, and their performance reflects both their dedication and the quality of support provided during their development.”

The introduction of the EPA marks an important development in police training in Scotland, strengthening the focus on consistent assessment, professional standards and developing confident, capable officers ready for frontline policing.
