New simulation-based training targets emergency response in tunnelling and mining

Breathing apparatus supplied by Dräger is being used as part of a new specialist training course developed by Triton Risk Management in partnership with Newcastle International Training Academy, aimed at professionals working in tunnelling and mining environments.

The course uses the fuselage of an aircraft simulator to recreate confined and hazardous conditions similar to those encountered during underground emergencies. It combines classroom-based learning with scenario-driven practical exercises designed to prepare emergency responders for a range of potential incidents.

As part of the programme, trainees use closed-circuit and open-circuit breathing apparatus, including Dräger’s PSS® BG4 and PSS® 7000 systems. The equipment is used to support hands-on training, allowing participants to practise operational checks and emergency procedures while working in smoke- and fire-simulated conditions.

According to the course developers, the use of breathing apparatus during training helps ensure familiarity with equipment while creating a realistic operating environment for responders expected to work in confined or low-visibility situations.

Victoria Woodhouse, Commercial Training Manager at Newcastle International Training Academy, said: “This showcases a highly positive development, with equipment originally designed for aviation safety now enhancing safety standards across other industries. Our longstanding partnership with Dräger has established them as a trusted and valued provider for this training.”

Tom Pearson, Marketing Manager for Engineered Solutions and Government Agencies at Dräger, said the company had a longstanding relationship with Newcastle International Training Academy and welcomed the opportunity to support a programme that draws on experience from multiple sectors.

Jonathan Davies of Triton Risk Management said the inclusion of breathing apparatus was intended to improve preparedness and confidence among trainees by allowing them to practise equipment use in controlled conditions before responding to real incidents.
