Neighbourhood policing uplift ‘on track’ as 2,383 officers join local roles

More than 2,000 police officers have been moved into neighbourhood policing roles so far, with forces on track to deliver a 3,000-officer uplift by April under the government’s neighbourhood policing guarantee.

Newly published Home Office data shows 2,383 additional officers had been redeployed into neighbourhood policing up to the end of September 2025. The figures demonstrate forces’ commitments to boost visible local policing and support the early delivery of the guarantee’s foundation commitments.

First set out in April last year, the neighbourhood policing guarantee includes plans for named, contactable officers in every community, a 72-hour response time to neighbourhood policing queries, and regular beat meetings. It also requires forces to have dedicated anti-social behaviour (ASB) leads in place.

“The results of the Safer Streets Summer Initiative clearly show the benefits of investing in neighbourhood policing and we must continue this momentum.

“We are grateful for these investments from the government and know that strong local policing plays a vital part in building trust and confidence within our communities, which is why we are committed to improving neighbourhood policing and delivering the results we have seen through the programme so far.

“Strengthening local policing teams to respond to local issues through initiatives such as the neighbourhood policing guarantee is a central part of our vision for police reform. Done right, it offers a powerful opportunity to rebuild trust and improve the way policing protects and supports communities.”

Deputy Chief Constable Catherine Akehurst.
