West Mercia Police has appointed Dr Carl Williams as its new Assistant Chief Constable, following a full recruitment process.

Dr Williams joins the force from Gwent Police, where he currently serves, bringing nearly 20 years of policing experience since starting his career in 2006. His background spans neighbourhood policing, specialist operations, strategic command roles and national policing functions.

His previous roles include Chief Superintendent for Neighbourhood Policing and Specialist Operations, forcewide Head of Territorial Policing, and Local Area Policing Commander with strategic responsibility for the force contact centre. He has also led Op Opal, the UK-wide intelligence unit focused on serious organised acquisitive crime.

Alongside his operational work, Dr Williams has contributed to policing at a national level through HMICFRS. He holds a Doctorate in Criminal Justice and completed the Executive Leadership Programme in summer 2025.

In his new role at West Mercia Police, Dr Williams will take strategic responsibility for crime and vulnerability. This includes oversight of major and serious organised crime investigations, strategic vulnerability, public contact, crime management, intelligence and forensic services.

His start date will be confirmed in due course.
