Dräger launches gas detection device for defence and rescue teams

Dräger has launched a new bespoke gas detection device designed to protect people operating in confined and high-risk environments across defence, industrial, construction and emergency rescue.

The Breathguard 2500 has been developed by Dräger’s Engineered Solutions division and provides continuous atmospheric monitoring in spaces where exposure to carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide presents a serious risk. The device is intended for use in environments where air exchange cannot be guaranteed, including military vehicles, industrial settings and emergency rescue operations.

The technology was created in response to a specific operational requirement from Rheinmetall Landsysteme, a long-standing defence and security customer of Dräger. Rheinmetall identified the need for an ultra-rugged, highly durable monitoring solution capable of operating reliably inside modern military defence vehicles, including its new Boxer flexible capability vehicle.

Breathguard 2500 continuously measures gas concentrations in air and triggers both audible and visual alarms if carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide levels exceed safe thresholds. This ensures that everyone within a confined space or vehicle is alerted immediately. The system can also transmit data via the Controller Area Network (CAN) directly to a vehicle’s Human Machine Interface (HMI), enabling crews to respond quickly to potentially life-threatening conditions.

Tom Pearson, Marketing Manager Engineered Solutions at Dräger says the design of Breathguard demonstrates Dräger’s Engineered Solutions division’s ability to design for safety in the toughest environments.

“Dräger’s engineering capability means we can support multiple industries by rethinking and redesigning existing, lifechanging technology and support, protecting the lives of front line personnel operating in different industries.

“We are thrilled to be able to deliver on Rheinmetall’s requirements and support the safety of military personnel.”

It features a patented internal pressure compensation system, allowing it to function across environmental pressures ranging from 700 to 1300 mbar. A silent mode is also available, suppressing alarm sounds and dimming visual indicators, ensuring the device meets defence and security testing requirements where discretion is essential.

While originally developed for military use, Dräger says the Breathguard 2500 is suitable for a wide range of applications, including land- and sea-based military vehicles, industrial confined spaces, and emergency rescue scenarios where responders may be exposed to hazardous gases without reliable ventilation.
