Fire service breaks ground on new station and fleet centre

Firefighters, construction workers and local officials gathered in East Cowes on the Isle of Wight last week to mark the start of construction on the town’s new fire station and fleet maintenance centre, a project expected to be completed later this year.

The ground-breaking ceremony signalled the beginning of the building phase for the new facility, which will replace the previous East Cowes Fire Station that was demolished in 2024. Since then, the town’s on-call firefighters have continued responding to incidents from Newport Fire Station.

The project is being led by Isle of Wight-based contractor MCM Construction Ltd., which is using locally sourced labour and resources. Organisers said this approach ensures island residents and businesses play a central role in building the station that will serve their community.

Members of the fire authority, senior officers and project partners involved in planning and design attended the event, which concluded with refreshments provided by the Rapid Relief Team.

Modern facilities for safer firefighting

The new station has been designed with features aimed at reducing contamination risks for firefighters. The site will also include a dedicated fleet and equipment maintenance facility for vehicles based on the Isle of Wight, improving operational efficiency and resilience.

Planners worked with the Isle of Wight Council to protect nearby trees and ensure the development would not encroach on surrounding properties, officials said.

Cllr Rhydian Vaughan MBE, chairman of the Fire Authority, said the project represented a major step forward for emergency services on the island.

“Today marks an important milestone in this exciting project which will bring a fantastic new fire station building to the town, benefiting not just the firefighters here in East Cowes, but also those across the island,” he said. “The rebuild demonstrates our commitment to ensuring our teams here on the Isle of Wight have access to modern and inclusive facilities, helping to keep them safe, healthy and allowing them to best respond to our communities in their times of need.”

Once complete, the new East Cowes Fire Station and Fleet Maintenance Centre will provide a permanent base for local crews and modern facilities to support emergency response across the island.
