De-Wipe has launched a new shampoo and conditioner designed to support the health and welfare of fire investigation and other operational dogs exposed to hazardous contaminants at incident scenes.

While handlers attend incidents wearing full personal protective equipment, dogs are often exposed to the same environments with limited protection. De-Wipe says the new product has been developed to address that gap, providing effective post-incident decontamination for working dogs.

The shampoo is formulated to remove soot, hydrocarbons and other combustion by-products that can be absorbed into a dog’s coat and skin during operations. Decontaminating dogs after deployments can also help reduce the risk of cross-contamination, with residues otherwise transferred to handlers, vehicles, kennels and homes via coats, paws and equipment.

Regular cleaning following exposure is also intended to support canine health and operational readiness, reducing skin irritation and the potential long-term effects of repeated contact with hazardous substances, while ensuring dogs are fit to return to duty.

Martin Lown, of FireWise UK Learning Academy, has been using the product with Hygge, a fire investigation dog.

He said: “I have been really impressed with the new dog shampoo. It smells great and, most importantly, it effectively removes the lingering smell of contaminants after operations. After washing, Hygge is left with that fresh ‘puppy smell’, which is a huge improvement.”
