New research calls for multi-agency response to health impact of fraud

A new report from The Police Foundation warns that fraud is leaving victims with significant physical and mental health problems, as gaps in support services mean many are not getting the help they need.

Invisible Harms: Understanding the Hidden Health Impact of Fraud draws on a survey of hundreds of victims across two police force areas in England. It finds that while the financial cost of fraud is widely recognised, its health impact is often overlooked.

The study found that 92 per cent of victims experienced at least one health symptom following fraud, most commonly linked to emotional or mental health. More than half (58 per cent) reported physical health symptoms, and nearly one in five (18.4 per cent) said they wanted support or treatment to address the impact.

Based on national crime figures, the report estimates that more than 56,000 victims each year may seek help for fraud-related health issues.

Blair Gibbs, Director of the Police Foundation, said fraud is now the most common crime type in the UK and carries unique psychological effects, including shame and self-blame, which can deter victims from seeking help.

The report calls for a cross-government review of victim support, the introduction of a national vulnerability framework, and closer working between policing, health and social care to ensure the health impact of fraud is recognised in response protocols.

Bernadette Lawrie BEM of Surrey and Sussex Police said face-to-face safeguarding visits help officers identify wider health and social needs and connect vulnerable victims with specialist support.

The charity Victim Support welcomed the research, saying it could lead to meaningful change for fraud victims.

The full report is available from The Police Foundation website.
