Thames Valley Police has launched a new Roads Policing Unit (RPU) Tasking Team, aimed at reducing harm on the county’s roads and supporting safer journeys across Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire.

The team will take an evidence-based approach, using collision data, intelligence, and emerging trends to identify locations and behaviours that pose the greatest risk. Each month, they will proactively deploy to these areas to tackle the offences driving road harm, from dangerous and impaired driving to other risky behaviours.

“The team’s primary focus will be proactive policing and enforcement. The public should expect to see increased action against those who break the law. Taskings will be set through robust internal processes, ensuring every deployment is guided by intelligence and data.”

Simon Hills, Inspector, Roads Policing Unit, Thames Valley Police.

Hills added that the team will also support local policing operations wherever possible and target individuals known through intelligence, including those involved in drink or drug driving. “We will be better equipped than ever to prevent danger and save lives,” he said.

The launch comes as the government introduces its new Roads Strategy, which emphasises prevention and focused action to reduce road casualties. The RPU Tasking Team is designed to deliver this locally, combining targeted enforcement with multi-agency collaboration.

Matthew Barber, Thames Valley Police and Crime Commissioner, speaking on the strategy, said: “The creation of the RPU Tasking Team is a major boost for Thames Valley Police in tackling dangerous and illegal driving. Effective enforcement is key, but collaboration with all agencies responsible for the road network is critical if we are to reduce fatalities and serious injuries year on year. Our Strategic Road Safety Partnership ensures this multi-agency approach is at the heart of making Thames Valley roads safer for everyone.”

With the RPU Tasking Team now operational, Thames Valley Police is taking a more strategic and coordinated approach to road safety, ensuring resources are deployed where they are needed most to protect lives on the county’s roads.
