Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner David Allen, has appointed Darren Martland as the next Chief Constable for Cumbria Constabulary.

CC Martland had been in the role on a temporary basis since last summer after the previous chief, Rob Carden, moved to head up Merseyside Police. He said he was ‘honoured’ to take on the role.

It is not CC Martland’s first time at the force, having been Assistant Chief Constable back in 2015 before moving on to Cheshire Police where he ended up as Chief Constable in 2019.

Welcoming him to the top role, Commissioner David Allen said: “Darren has worked with colleagues over the last three years to improve Cumbria Constabulary to support victims and communities, tackle criminality and support the workforce including strengthening police numbers to put more Officers back on our streets.”

CC Martland added that the force will build on providing a visible policing presence for communities in Cumbria “through neighbourhood policing, taking proactive action against criminality and keeping victims at the forefront of what we do.”
