Cumbria Constabulary modernises frontline operations with new mobile app

Cumbria Constabulary is set to roll out a new digital policing platform to its front-line officers after signing a 10-year agreement aimed at improving how officers access information and complete reports while on patrol.

The force will deploy Motorola Solutions’ Pronto mobile policing application across its 1,300 front-line officers, enabling them to access incident dispatch updates, search policing databases and complete reports directly from handheld devices while in the field.

According to Cumbria Constabulary, the system will consolidate several operational processes into a single mobile application, reducing the time officers and dispatch staff spend searching for information or inputting data across multiple systems.

Chief Superintendent Matt Kennerley said the technology would be particularly valuable given the force’s large and predominantly rural policing area.

“Putting our incident dispatch, database search and records management functions at the fingertips of our officers in one, easy-to-use mobile solution is critical,” Kennerley said. “Our force covers one of the largest geographical areas in the UK, and with Pronto, our officers can work more safely and effectively in our communities and deliver better outcomes for the public.”

The application will provide officers with real-time emergency dispatch notifications, guiding them to incidents more quickly while delivering key operational information to support their response.

It also enables officers to run checks against local, national and international policing databases from mobile devices, as well as capture evidence-grade notes, reports, fingerprints and photographs while at the scene.

A key benefit for rural forces such as Cumbria is the ability for officers to file police reports directly from the field, rather than returning to a police station to complete paperwork, potentially saving significant travel and administrative time.

Motorola Solutions said the technology is designed to bring operational data directly to officers working on the front line.

David Shorland, UK and Ireland sales director at Motorola Solutions, said mobile systems such as Pronto help officers remain connected throughout the lifecycle of an incident.

“For a rural police force such as Cumbria, being able to work without returning to the station is an essential requirement for frontline staff, offering incredible time savings by reducing both administrative and travel time,” he said.

Pronto is already widely used across UK policing. More than 75,000 officers across 24 of the country’s 45 territorial police forces use the system daily, according to Motorola Solutions.

Across the UK, the platform supports more than 250 million digital interactions with police dispatch systems each year, alongside 18 million searches of the Police National Computer and the completion of more than 4.9 million crime, intelligence and witness reports.

The application can also integrate with other operational technologies used by police, including vehicle-based navigation systems via Android Auto and body-worn cameras, allowing officers to capture and manage evidence more efficiently while responding to incidents.
