Drones and robotics take centre stage in the next phase of emergency response

The role of drones and robotics in emergency response is no longer emerging, it is operational, evolving and increasingly central to how services make decisions under pressure. What has changed in recent years is not just the pace of adoption, but the ecosystem forming around it – regulation, capability and collaboration are beginning to move in step.

For organisations like The Drone Rules, that alignment between innovation and real-world application is critical. As Founder William Arinze explains, the focus is on “helping teams bridge the gap between interesting technology and something they can actually deploy with confidence when safety, speed and good decision-making matter most.” That sentiment reflects a wider shift across the sector – technology is only valuable if it works within the constraints of frontline operations.

This is where events like The Emergency Services Show and The Emergency Tech Show play a crucial role. Co-locating the operational and technological conversations creates a space where strategy meets capability. It also reflects how the conversation around drones and robotics has matured. No longer a niche discussion, but one that sits alongside broader questions about response, resilience and safety.

As Arinze puts it, “The Emergency Tech Show is explicitly focused on technology that meets real operational need, not technology for its own sake. It is also co-located with The Emergency Services Show, so you get the digital, unmanned and innovation conversation sitting alongside the wider operational response picture.” For him, that combination ensures the discussion happens in the right place – “in front of the people who actually need to assess, adopt and use these systems in the real world.”

That connection between innovation and end user is echoed by those working directly within emergency services. Lee Newman, a Station Officer at London Fire Brigade and Co-founder of UKERRO, highlights the importance of bringing responders and technology together in a practical setting.

For both Arinze and Newman, the value lies not just in showcasing technology, but in demonstrating it in context. That’s particularly important in a sector where decisions carry real consequences. The regulatory landscape is also becoming more structured, with frameworks such as UK SORA and Remote ID shaping how drones can be deployed safely and at scale.

At the same time, operational use is already well established. Arinze points to figures showing UK police forces carrying out around 60,000 drone flights a year, alongside growing use in fire and rescue for thermal imaging and situational awareness.

But adoption isn’t driven by policy alone. As Newman notes, the key factors are safety and speed. “It’s safer to deploy a robot or drone into some dangerous situations,” he says, adding that drones also provide “quickness of situational awareness.” In practice, that means faster decisions, reduced risk to personnel and better-informed command at incidents.

This is where dedicated spaces within major events become particularly important. A focused Drones & Robotics Zone at The Emergency Tech Show, for example, allows visitors to move beyond theory and into practice – seeing how systems perform, how they integrate into workflows and where they add value. Arinze describes this as closing “the gap between curiosity and informed decision-making,” while Newman emphasises that bringing everything into one place allows “more engaged” conversations when technology is being demonstrated rather than discussed.

That hands-on element is central to UKERRO’s approach, and it is also reflected in the programming of its upcoming event, the Emergency Robotics Summit. Taking place on 29–30 April, the summit is designed as a practitioner-led environment, combining demonstrations, workshops, and expert-led sessions. Newman describes it as “a one-stop shop to interact with people who have walked this path already,” where attendees can speak directly with training providers and technology suppliers.

“Our aim is bringing together all rescue responders using drones and robotics by creating an immersive experience with hands-on demonstration, workshops with SMEs,” he explains, adding that the goal is to support “the end user and team leads.”

The format is deliberately immersive. Across the two days, attendees can expect a mix of guest speakers, live demonstrations, and workshops covering areas such as search and rescue, indoor flying, and disaster environments. It’s an approach designed to replicate real operational conditions, giving teams the chance to test and understand systems before considering deployment.

For Arinze, that kind of engagement is essential. “Confidence is not built from a brochure or a spec sheet,” he says. “It comes from seeing the data quality, the workflow, the team footprint, the setup time, and just as importantly the limitations.” That emphasis on realism is what ultimately underpins safe adoption.

Looking ahead, both speakers point to continued evolution in the sector. Arinze highlights a shift towards integration – “from isolated devices to integrated capability” – with drones, robotics and control systems increasingly working together across operations. Newman similarly points to the growth of autonomy, with developments such as drone-in-a-box systems and the potential for more advanced robotic deployment in the future.

But while the technology continues to advance, the core principle remains the same – capability must serve the responder. Or, as Arinze puts it, “drones and robotics are no longer a future conversation; they are a capability conversation happening right now.”

Bringing that conversation into one place, whether at The Emergency Services Show, The Emergency Tech Show or the upcoming Emergency Robotics Summit, ensures it stays grounded in the realities of emergency response. It is not just about showcasing what is possible, but about shaping what is practical, safe and ready for the frontline.
