Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service has appointed Mark Arkwell as its new Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive, with him formally stepping into the role at the end of March.

Arkwell succeeds Wayne Bowcock following his retirement. He moves up from Deputy Chief Fire Officer and Director of Operations, bringing more than 26 years’ experience in the fire and rescue sector, including service with Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. He began his career as a trainee firefighter in 1999.

Setting out his priorities, Arkwell said the Service would maintain a strong focus on emergency response while continuing to strengthen prevention and protection work across homes and businesses to reduce incidents before they occur.

He also highlighted the need for the organisation to adapt to changing risks across Berkshire, with a focus on building a modern, inclusive service centred on community needs.

“Our people are at the heart of everything we do,” he said. “I am committed to investing in their development and wellbeing, and making sure they have the tools and support they need to deliver for the public.”

Arkwell acknowledged the financial pressures facing public services, adding that the Service must be ready to adapt quickly and think differently as risks evolve.

“It is a huge privilege to lead the teams that make up our organisation, and I am looking forward to working with the Fire Authority, our communities and partners to deliver the level of service the public expects.”
