The National Police Capabilities Environment (NPCE) has reached full operating capability, marking the completion of the national programme designed to modernise digital infrastructure across UK policing.

Developed by the Police Digital Service, the programme formally closed following successful delivery and assurance in April 2026. Responsibility for the platform will now move into business-as-usual operations, overseen by a dedicated product manager.

The NPCE has been developed as a secure national cloud platform, built on Microsoft Azure, to support the hosting and lifecycle management of policing applications. It is intended to help forces develop, test and deploy digital tools more quickly while improving resilience, interoperability and value for money.

Over the past three years, the programme has delivered a number of milestones, including the onboarding of analytical tools for policing during 2025.

“Reaching full operating capability and closing the NPCE project is a significant achievement for policing. We have delivered a secure, national platform that removes barriers to innovation and makes it easier for forces to access and share digital tools. Transitioning into business as usual means the NPCE can now focus on continuous improvement and supporting the next generation of national policing applications.”

Steve Woodard, Director of Managed Services at PDS.

According to PDS, the platform will continue to support delivery of the National Policing Digital Strategy by providing a consistent national IT architecture and a framework for scaling successful local technology solutions into national capabilities.

PDS is a partner at The Emergency Tech Show 2026, taking place from 16-17 September at the NEC in Birmingham. You can find them on Stand K102. Register your interest in attending here.
