New fire engines set to strengthen emergency response across Cleveland

Cleveland Fire Brigade will introduce four new fire engines into frontline service by the end of May as part of an ongoing investment in its operational fleet.

The new appliances have been fitted with updated technology and equipment aimed at improving firefighter safety, operational capability and crew welfare, with all four due to enter service from 1 June. The Brigade said the vehicles were designed to meet the demands of modern risks while providing improved protection and comfort for crews attending incidents.

The investment forms part of a planned fleet replacement programme, with wholetime fire engines typically replaced after around 15 years to ensure they remain fit for operational use. A dedicated project team involving operational staff and a representative from the Fire Brigades Union contributed to the design process from the outset.

Darren Richards, Assistant Director of Assets at Cleveland Fire Brigade, said: “These new fire engines have been designed with firefighter safety, comfort and efficiency at the heart of every decision.

“They feature a fully clean cab to help remove contaminants, wipe-clean seating, and improved storage including dedicated breathing apparatus and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) stowage.”

Richards said crews would also benefit from practical additions including a rear cab Mobile Data Terminal relay screen, a public address system and fitted fridges designed to help keep water cool during warmer weather.

“Every element of the design has been carefully considered, and it’s clear that the feedback from our staff has directly shaped these vehicles.”

The final appliance was delivered on 6 May, completing the rollout project. As part of the Brigade’s wider replacement programme, the outgoing vehicles will move into the on-call fleet, while existing on-call appliances will be reassigned to reserve and training duties.

The Brigade described the process, known as an “appliance roll down”, as involving significant work behind the scenes from departments including the Technical Hub and Operational Support teams, which prepare and maintain vehicles for frontline service.
