Hertfordshire Constabulary has officially opened its new £55m headquarters in Welwyn Garden City, completing a major investment in modern policing infrastructure designed to support operational effectiveness, officer wellbeing and long-term sustainability.
The four-storey, 9,750sqm building replaces the force’s former headquarters and five ageing buildings with a single purpose-built facility that will accommodate around 900 officers and staff.
The headquarters was officially opened during a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by project partners and local leaders after the scheme was delivered on time and within budget.
Designed with sustainability and workplace wellbeing in mind, the building includes solar panels, heat recovery systems and sustainable drainage features. It is also targeting WELL Platinum and BREEAM Excellent certification, recognising its focus on creating a healthy and efficient working environment.
The project comes as police forces continue to modernise their estates in line with the government’s 2026 police reform white paper, From Local to National: A New Model for Policing, which highlights the importance of digital infrastructure, sustainable buildings and supporting workforce wellbeing.

The new headquarters brings together a number of operational teams under one roof, including the major crime unit, victim services, the dog unit, senior leadership and operational support functions.
Multi-disciplinary consultancy Pick Everard acted as technical adviser through the SCAPE Consultancy framework, supporting the design and delivery of the redevelopment alongside contractor Willmott Dixon and engineering consultancy AECOM.
