Change at the top as Cheshire chief announces retirement

After a 33 year career in policing, Chief Constable Mark Roberts QPM, is retiring from the top job at Cheshire Constabulary with PCC Dan Price yet to set out a timetable for the appointment of his successor.

Describing policing as a “vocation and a privilege” CC Roberts said that he was proud of his three decades in policing. In a career spanning three different forces (including two stints in Cheshire), he began work as a PC in Salford in 1993 and spent some of his career in Northwest Counter Terrorism Unit as Head of Investigations, returning eventually to Cheshire in 2021 to take up the chief’s job.

As he responded to the announcement of his retirement, CC Roberts said he was also proud of the HMICFRS inspection: “where we were the only force to be graded as ‘outstanding’ in managing offenders and suspects, and one of only two forces to be graded as ‘outstanding’ for protecting vulnerable people.”

He has been the national lead for football policing and covert legislation and guidance since 2014, overseeing many football tournaments with his retirement coming at a timely point after the conclusion of the 2026 Fifa World Cup.
