From AI adoption to operational impact, what comes next for emergency services technology

Returning as a Premier Partner and sponsor of the Emergency Tech Leaders Stage at The Emergency Tech Show 2026, AWS is helping shape the conversation around how cloud technology, artificial intelligence and collaboration are supporting the next phase of digital transformation across policing and the emergency services.

Artificial intelligence, cloud computing and digital transformation continue to dominate conversations across policing and the wider emergency services. But as organisations move beyond exploring the possibilities of emerging technologies to implementing them in operational environments, the focus is shifting towards how innovation can be delivered responsibly, securely and with clear benefits for frontline services.

Those themes are expected to be front and centre at The Emergency Tech Show 2026, where AWS returns as both a Premier Partner and sponsor of the Emergency Tech Leaders Stage. Bringing together technology providers, public sector leaders and frontline practitioners, the stage will explore how organisations are modernising legacy systems, adopting AI and building resilient digital infrastructure that can support emergency response today and in the future.

For AWS, the conversation is not simply about technology. Instead, it is about helping emergency services identify operational challenges first and then applying the right technology to solve them.

Putting operational challenges first

Unlike organisations built around a single solution, AWS provides a broad cloud offering, spanning more than 240 services, from infrastructure and storage to analytics and generative AI. Rather than leading with technology, however, the company adopts what it calls a ‘working backwards’ approach, beginning with the operational outcomes organisations are trying to achieve.

That customer-first philosophy reflects a broader shift taking place across the emergency services, where investment decisions are increasingly driven by operational need rather than technology for technology’s sake.

“Although we can be considered a technology provider, we don’t start conversations around services or tools. We put the customer at the centre of everything and take the time to understand their operational challenges in detail.

“Only once we understand those challenges do we define how technology can help. By combining our experience with the breadth of AWS services, we can develop solutions that genuinely address the problems organisations are trying to solve rather than asking them to adapt to the technology.”

That flexibility is one of cloud technology’s biggest strengths. As operational demands fluctuate, organisations can scale services up or down without being tied to fixed infrastructure or long procurement cycles.

“Our services are modular building blocks that organisations can combine as their requirements evolve. With pay-as-you-go pricing, customers only pay for what they consume, allowing them to respond quickly to changing operational demands while maintaining the agility that modern emergency services require.”

AI that supports frontline professionals to be effective

As artificial intelligence becomes an increasingly important part of policing and emergency response, conversations are evolving beyond whether organisations should adopt AI to how they can do so safely, ethically and transparently. For AWS, AI should enhance human decision-making rather than replace it.

“Our approach is never to substitute the human or replace their knowledge and expertise. The value of AI is in removing repetitive, time-consuming tasks so people can focus on the work that really requires their judgement and experience. By helping ensure the right information is available to the right people at the right time, AI can support faster, more informed decision-making while keeping humans firmly in control.”

That philosophy is already being put into practice across UK policing. West Midlands Police’s Andi-Esra project, built using Amazon Connect, uses an AI-powered voice assistant to answer non-emergency 101 calls, understand why members of the public are calling and prioritise vulnerable callers for immediate transfer to a human operator. Since launching, the system has helped improve response times while allowing call handlers to focus on more complex enquiries.

Meanwhile, Bedfordshire Police has worked with AWS to develop an AI-powered chatbot that now saves more than 1,500 staff hours every year by automatically handling routine enquiries and directing users to the appropriate service. With almost 40 per cent of enquiries resolved without requiring contact centre staff, resources can instead be focused on incidents requiring immediate police attention.

Both examples illustrate how organisations are beginning to use AI to remove administrative burdens and improve operational efficiency.

Building resilience through trust and collaboration

As emergency services become increasingly reliant on digital platforms, resilience, security and governance remain fundamental to successful transformation. Rather than treating security as an additional consideration, AWS says it is built into every layer of its cloud infrastructure.

“Our cloud infrastructure has been designed with security, resilience and reliability at its core, and is trusted by organisations across government, healthcare and financial services.

“Customers remain in control of where their data resides, including within our UK Regions, and it is never moved without explicit action. Combined with geographic redundancy, automatic failover and extensive third-party assurance, this gives organisations the confidence to innovate while maintaining the levels of security and compliance that public safety demands.”

Alongside technology, AWS also believes collaboration across the wider partner community will be essential if digital transformation is to deliver lasting benefits.

“Partners are fundamental to how we deliver for customers. They bring specialist expertise across technologies, industries and operational environments that complements our own capabilities. By working together, we can help public safety organisations accelerate innovation, solve complex technical challenges and ultimately deliver better outcomes for the communities they serve.”

Continuing the conversation at The Emergency Tech Show
