In an exciting development for this year’s show, premier partner Zoll Medical UK is launching a new professional monitor/defibrillator with a strong focus on usability based on extensive feedback from its customers. Sharing this and other developments, I find out from Meg Parker why ZOLL chooses the show and sees it as a key date in its busy calendar.

What keeps you coming back to The Emergency Services Show each year?

For me, it’s the people. The Emergency Services Show brings together so many of the professionals who are working on the frontline, so it’s a really valuable opportunity to listen to what they’re experiencing and understand the challenges they’re facing.

It’s also a great chance to see where the industry is heading. Emergency services are constantly evolving, and the show gives us an opportunity to demonstrate how technology can support that evolution, while having genuine conversations with the people who will ultimately use it. There’s always something new to learn, and that’s what makes the show so valuable for us year after year.

For visitors who don’t know what ZOLL does, can you tell us about the products you offer for the emergency services?

ZOLL is probably best known for our resuscitation technology, but our portfolio goes much further than just defibrillators. We provide a range of solutions designed to support emergency care from the point of first response through to hospital, including monitor/defibrillators, automated CPR, ventilators, AEDs and software and data solutions.

What links all of our products is the focus on helping emergency responders deliver high-quality care when time really matters. Whether that’s providing real-time feedback during CPR, supporting ventilation or helping crews continue resuscitation during patient transport, our aim is to give responders technology that is intuitive, reliable and designed around the realities of emergency care.

What challenges are ambulance services telling you they are facing when it comes to operating in extreme heat, as we’ve seen this summer?

Extreme heat creates challenges on a number of levels. First and foremost, it puts additional pressure on the crews themselves, who are already working in incredibly demanding environments. We’re also seeing the impact that heat can have on patients, particularly those who are vulnerable to heat-related illness.

From an operational perspective, ambulance services need to know that their equipment can perform reliably in challenging environments and that their vehicles, devices and consumables remain ready to use when they’re needed. That’s why durability, reliability and ease of use are so important. Our conversations with customers are increasingly about resilience and we are talking to them about how we can help them continue to deliver the same high standard of care regardless of the conditions they are working in.

We are starting to see emergency services using underwater drones to rescue casualties, what can ZOLL offer to complement this tech as part of a rescue capability?

It’s really interesting to see how technology such as underwater drones is being used to help emergency services locate and reach casualties in situations where it may otherwise be extremely difficult or dangerous for responders to do so. Once that casualty has been located and brought to safety, ZOLL has a range of technologies that can support different stages of that care, from monitoring and defibrillation through to CPR and ventilation support.

Temperature management is also an important consideration, particularly for casualties who have been submerged in cold water or are suffering from hypothermia. ZOLL’s Thermogard system provides precise temperature management and can rapidly warm or cool a patient’s core temperature, making it particularly relevant further along the patient journey when they reach the emergency or critical-care environment.

It’s a great example of how innovation doesn’t necessarily have to be one piece of technology doing everything. It’s about different technologies working together to improve the chances of a better outcome for the patient.

Many of our visitors will be thinking about the introduction of Martyn’s Law next year, what does ZOLL offer to those responsible for venues where this applies?

For venues, preparedness is a really important part of the conversation around Martyn’s Law. While the legislation is focused on protecting the public from terrorism, having the right emergency response equipment and processes in place is an important part of overall preparedness.

ZOLL can support venues with solutions including AEDs, CPR technology and AED management software. For example, our AEDs provide real-time CPR feedback to help guide rescuers, while our PlusTrac programme can help organisations manage their AED estates, including device readiness, battery and electrode expiry and responder certification.

Having an AED is only part of the solution. Organisations also need to know where their devices are, that they’re ready to use and that people have the confidence and training to act when an emergency happens. That combination of equipment, readiness and training is where we can really add value.

Can you tell us about any new products our visitors can expect to see when they visit you at the show this year?

One of the products we’re particularly excited to be showcasing this year is ZOLL Zenix, our new professional monitor/defibrillator.

Zenix is a really exciting addition to the ZOLL portfolio. It has been developed with extensive feedback from our customers and is designed to make it easier for clinicians and EMS professionals to access the information they need, particularly in high-pressure situations.

It features a large, durable touchscreen with a highly intuitive interface and customisable displays, alongside some of the technologies ZOLL is known for, including Real CPR Help and Real BVM Help, which provide real-time feedback during CPR and ventilation.

What’s particularly exciting about Zenix is that it brings together advanced technology with a really strong focus on usability. We know that our customers are working in incredibly challenging environments, so innovation isn’t just about adding more technology, it’s about making sure that technology genuinely helps them do their job.

Zenix has received EU MDR approval this year, so it’s a really exciting time for us to be bringing this new generation of monitor/defibrillator technology to our customers. We’re looking forward to giving visitors the opportunity to see it for themselves at the show and talk to our team about what it could mean for the future of pre-hospital care.
