Safety and trust feature in King’s Speech

The King has set out the commitments of the new government in a heavily trailed speech as part of the State Opening of Parliament that includes legislation to help tackle anti-social behaviour, bring in Martyn’s Law and extend the duty of candour to all public servants.

To strengthen community policing, the Crime and Policing Bill will be introduced to give the police greater powers to deal with anti-social behaviour. The Labour Party manifesto set out a commitment to an additional 13,000 neighbourhood police and community PCSOs and specialist abuse advisers in 999 control rooms at peak times as part of a new Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee.

As expected, the King confirmed that Martyn’s Law will be introduced – its formal name is the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill. This is intended to improve the safety and security of public venues and help keep the public safe from terrorism. Martyn’s Law is named after Martyn Hett, who died in the Manchester Arena bombing. His mother, Figen Murray, has campaigned tirelessly for this change and met Keir Starmer on the day the election was called, he confirmed it would happen in a letter sent to her afterwards.

And the speech confirms that the duty of candour will be extended to embrace all public servants.
