Removing paper from healthcare settings is all part of a green future

The NHS is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by the urgent need to achieve sustainability. As one of the largest and most vital public institutions in the UK, the NHS is at the forefront of efforts to reduce carbon emissions, improve efficiency, and ensure the well-being of both patients and frontline staff. At the heart of this transformation CPS is pioneering a better future for emergency services through innovation and automation.

One of the key areas where CPS is making a substantial impact is in the move towards a paperless healthcare environment. The traditional reliance on paper within the NHS has long been a challenge, both in terms of environmental impact and operational efficiency.

In a single ward, the costs associated with printing services can amount to approximately £720,000 annually. This figure includes not just the cost of paper and ink, but also storage, administration, and disposal costs. When extrapolated across the entire NHS, these expenses become staggering, not to mention the environmental toll they represent.

The potential to save thousands of trees by moving away from paper-based processes is not just an environmental consideration, but a crucial step towards achieving the NHS’s carbon net zero initiatives. This transition is about more than just saving trees; it’s about fundamentally changing the way the NHS operates to create a more sustainable future.

Move to digital records

CPS’s paperless innovations are central to this change. By eliminating the need for paper, CPS is not only reducing waste but also improving the quality of data across the NHS. Paper-based records are prone to errors, inconsistencies, and can be easily lost or damaged. Digital records, on the other hand, are more accurate, easier to manage, and can be securely accessed by authorised personnel at any time. This leads to better patient outcomes, as healthcare professionals can make more informed decisions based on reliable data.

Furthermore, the shift towards digital records is also enhancing health and safety within the NHS. Paper records can be a source of contamination, especially in high-risk environments such as emergency wards. By removing paper from these settings, CPS is helping to create a safer, cleaner environment for both patients and staff. This is particularly important in the context of the ongoing challenges posed by infectious diseases, where every precaution must be taken to prevent the spread of illness.

The benefits of CPS’s innovations are not limited to environmental and health improvements. They also extend to the well-being of frontline staff. The automation of routine tasks, such as the management of patient records, frees up valuable time for healthcare professionals, allowing them to focus more on patient care. This not only improves job satisfaction but also reduces the risk of burnout, a growing concern within the NHS.

As the NHS continues to navigate the challenges of the 21st century, the role of innovation and automation in driving sustainability cannot be overstated. CPS is pioneering solutions that are transforming vital operations within the NHS. By removing paper, improving data quality, and enhancing health and safety, CPS is helping to build a better, more sustainable future for emergency services.
