Avon Fire and Rescue Service (AF&RS) has teamed up with online food delivery company, Deliveroo, to educate riders on safe battery charging practices.

AF&RS says the collaboration came about in response to a rising number of fires involving e-bikes and e-scooters. This year alone, AF&RS has witnessed 57 fires linked to lithium-ion batteries, highlighting the urgency of the need to address the issue.

Deliveroo riders gathered in Bristol City Centre on 17 September for a ‘Rider Roadshow’. During the event, firefighters spoke to riders about the potential dangers of e-bike and e-scooter fires, showing just how rapidly they can spread and the intensity of these incidents. Riders received key advice on how to use, charge and store their e-bikes and e-scooters safely.

Watch Manager Jon Westwood, who organised the event, emphasised the importance of raising awareness and following safety advice. He said, “Our priority is the safety of everyone using e-bikes and e-scooters. Whether you’re a Deliveroo rider or a local resident, it’s vital to understand the risks and take the necessary precautions to prevent fires. By following our simple safety advice, we can significantly reduce the risk of battery fires to keep all of us safer.”

The AF&RS collaboration echoes a London Fire Brigade initiative last year, which saw it work with major companies, including Amazon and Deliveroo, to share its #ChargeSafe messaging.
