West Midlands Fire Authority Vice Chair calls for greater transparency in letter to staff

West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) has made public a letter to staff from the Vice Chair of the West Midlands Fire and Rescue Authority (WMFRA).

As well as praising WMFS staff for their ‘outstanding professionalism’, the communication from Councillor Catherine Miks also talks about the need for greater transparency moving forwards.

The letter notes that this ‘includes both improving working relationships with senior officers… and the balance between operational and political decision making’.

Miks also explains that the recruitment process for a new CEO/CFO is ongoing and she is ‘confident that the right candidate will be appointed to lead the service and continue with the focus of one team moving forward’.

The letter ends with Miks addressing comments she made during a closed fire authority meeting in February, which have since come to light in a recording. The Vice Chair says her comment that “everyone at some stage has put something on their CV that they later regretted” was taken out of context. She says they were discussing the late Wayne Brown, WMFS Chief Fire Officer, who was found dead at his home in January this year.

Miks says she was saddened because Brown was no longer around to give his side of the story about the contents of his CV.
