West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) has taken delivery of the final two vehicles in a 52-appliance rollout, marking the successful completion of a major fleet renewal programme aimed at boosting firefighter safety and operational efficiency across the region.

Delivered by Emergency One at an average rate of one vehicle per week, the new pumping appliances have been introduced into frontline service over the past year. The vehicles were built to a bespoke WYFRS specification, reflecting the service’s commitment to modernising its capabilities while prioritising the welfare of its crews.

“These appliances are a great addition to our fleet.

“They provide more efficient operational systems and, crucially, safer working conditions for our firefighters — whether that’s through improved locker layouts, updated technology or clean cab solutions.”

Glynn Richardson, Head of Transport & Logistics at WYFRS.

Designed around firefighter needs

Each of the 52 appliances features a range of enhancements tailored to real-world operational demands. Key improvements include a larger 2,500-litre water tank, allowing crews to tackle a wider range of incidents without the need for immediate refilling. Safety and ease of use are central to the design, with features such as pull-out breathing apparatus (BA) lockers on both sides of the vehicle, adjustable in height to suit individual firefighters.

In support of WYFRS’s clean cab initiative — which aims to reduce firefighter exposure to harmful substances — the new appliances also include a dedicated stowage locker at the rear for contaminated kit. This is complemented by a full-access step, making safe stowage and retrieval easier and more hygienic.

Other user-focused enhancements include:

  • A power beam ladder gantry that automatically lowers ladders to a safe working height, addressing the increased body height resulting from expanded locker space and the larger tank.
  • An enhanced cab layout featuring ergonomic seating, USB charging points and cup holders, ensuring comfort and convenience for crews during long shifts.
  • A Cross Cab system that provides dedicated space for PPE, personal items and documents, helping keep the cab clean, organised and clutter-free.

The updated appliances have already been deployed across the service area and are expected to improve response capabilities while reducing the physical strain on firefighters. By integrating modern technology and safety-focused design elements, WYFRS continues to demonstrate leadership in frontline service provision.

In addition to renewing its vehicle fleet, WYFRS also moved to a massive new headquarters, which sits alongside a revitalised training centre and relocated fire station.
