The Chief Fire Officer of Mid and West Wales Fire Service (MAWWFRS) will reportedly step down this year, after being with the service for 29 years.

According to ITV Cymru Wales, Roger Thomas announced that he will retire in October, just three years after he assumed the top job at MAWWFRS.

It’s been a turbulent year for MAWWFRS. In February, an independent review into the service’s culture uncovered widespread bullying and harrassment at the so-called “operational boys’ club.” Responding at the time, Thomas said he apologised “unreservedly” to colleagues who have been subject to “bullying, harassment or discrimination in any form.”

Thomas’s retirement comes after a new Chair and Deputy Chair were recently elected to lead Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Authority over the next two municipal years.

At the Fire Authority’s Annual General Meeting on 9 June 9, Councillor John Davies of Pembrokeshire was elected Chair and Councillor Matthew Crowley of Neath Port Talbot was elected Deputy Chair.

“It is a huge privilege to be elected Chair at a time of significant changes and challenges within the Fire and Rescue Service sector in Wales.”

MAWWFRS is the third largest fire and rescue service in the UK, behind the Scottish and Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Services.
