Report Fraud had its public launch this week with the City of London Police promoting the new national service designed to transform how victims and businesses across England, Wales and Northern Ireland report cyber crime and fraud, and how law enforcement and industry respond.
City of London Police Commissioner Pete O’Doherty said that the public launch of Report Fraud was the culmination of an extensive transformation programme and one that puts the victim first, giving them a “front door to policing.”
Cyber crime and fraud are now the most common crime in the UK, accounting for around 50 per cent of all offences and costing the economy billions of pounds each year. Report Fraud provides a national gateway for reporting and intelligence and for the first time brings together the reporting of both cyber crime and fraud in one place.
“Cyber crime and fraud are the crimes most likely to affect people in this country, yet too often victims feel unsure where to turn or what will happen if they make a report,” explained the Commissioner. He added that Report Fraud is not just a new service, “it is a major upgrade to the UK’s defences against economic crime.”
The public information campaign launched this week and includes Every Report Counts, a short video explaining Report Fraud and the impact it will have on victims.
The City of London Police is the National Lead Force for fraud but the City of London Corporation provided significant financial support of over £13m for the development of Report Fraud and will provide £2.5m annual contribution for running costs.
