New conference offers multi-disciplinary view from world of fire research

Rowena Hill10 March 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

The National Fire Chiefs Council’s Academic Collaboration, Evaluation and Research (ACER) board is hosting its first conference on 18 and 19 March with academic speakers sharing work focused on prevention, protection, response, looking after people, and how history may play a role in the culture of fire and rescue services.

ACER is an independent forum, convened by NFCC, to help coordinate and maximise the benefits of academic research with relevance for fire and rescue services to contribute to improved public and firefighter safety. This year’s conference builds on a research tradition that saw the Fire Related Research Event held for many years at West Midlands Fire Service HQ and before that, the Fire Service College.

The multidisciplinary conference welcomes all fire-interested academics, practitioners, evaluation officers, policy teams, strategic leaders and early career researchers in the field of fire.

Supporting a combination of academic knowledge with its application and understanding the ‘so what’ of research findings, the conference offers a unique perspective on the fire and rescue service. Those attending will be able to see an indicative range of exciting and demanding work that is currently underway across the academic teams interested in fire research.

There will also be an introduction to the ACER board. which I chair, our activities and how your work can fit with the national opportunities.
